Carpincho Leather

  • The carpincho is a mammal native to South America. It is the largest living rodent in the world. Also called chigüire, chigüiro and capybara
  • Scientific name is hydrochoerus hydrochaeris
  • Carpincho is hunted for the meat. The skin is a byproduct
  • CITES status is non-appendix, meaning it does not require CITES
  • Features:
    • Carpincho leather is soft and supple
    • Small pores like pig species

    • 2 ft wide by 4 ft long
    • 1.3/1.5 mm thickness
  • PAL offers various grades of carpincho leather
    • Grade 1: no defects in the center area, ideal for handbags and upholstery
    • Grade 2: one defect or small cluster of defects affecting one quadrant of the center area, ideal for footwear, garments and gloves
